Salam, I have a wife who always says that she is responsible for her mom to take care of all the expenses as her father has passed away and her mother has got married to a second man and he doesnt take care properly is it her duty to take care of her mom and she is havin two sisters one is 26 years old and other is 25 years old kindly advice. Is it according to sharia she has to take care of her family. Kindly do the needful thanks.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Dear Brother,

Your wife’s mother is married. It is her husband’s responsibility to provide shelter, clothing and food for her.

You state, “the husband does not take care of her properly”. What is meant by properly? What does the husband not do for her?

If the mother requires anything above shelter, food and clothing, and her husband does not provide that, then if your wife and her sister contribute to the need of their mother, they will be greatly rewarded for their sacrifices. Your wife cannot put that burden on you. However, if you assist her to assist her mother, you too will be greatly rewarded, and it will be an investment for you in the hereafter.
